How Can Compression Socks Help With Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis heel pain is not only frustrating, but can be disabling too. Plantar Fasciitis can develop when you injure the tissue called the plantar fascia at the bottom of your heel and foot, and create painful micro-tears in the fibre of the tissue. This can happen when you overload or strain the plantar fascia with a sudden intense physical activity or jumping, climbing a lot of stairs or wearing shoes that don’t support your arch, although sometimes it can happen simply from gaining weight or getting older.
It’s normally a combination of multiple causes that have caused the Plantar Fasciitis pain, and it’s important to correct these to prevent Plantar Fasciitis from becoming a worsening problem in the future. Most people with Plantar Fasciitis have heel pain first thing in the morning, but they can also have swelling, radiating arch pain and aches that ebb and flow, and while some people have mild discomfort, this can quickly escalate into an intense stabbing pain.
Preventative Foot Care Is Key
The good news is that most plantar fasciitis can be managed successfully. Treatment focuses on reducing aggravating loads initially while progressively rebuilding the strength and capacity of the plantar fascia and surrounding muscles.
Depending on the individual, this may include appropriate footwear, activity modification, targeted stretching and strengthening, strapping, foot orthoses and, in persistent cases, treatments such as shockwave therapy.
Some people also find compression foot sleeves such as the FS6 Compression Foot Sleeve comfortable during this process. We view these as an additional support or symptom-management option rather than a treatment for the underlying cause of plantar fasciitis.
How Can FS6 Compression Socks Help Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain?
The FS6 Performance Foot Sleeve is an elasticated compression sleeve designed specifically around the foot and arch.
Some people with plantar fasciitis find the compression and support around the arch and heel comfortable, particularly when they're on their feet for long periods. The close-fitting sleeve may provide a feeling of support and can be worn underneath a regular sock and inside many shoes.
It's important to understand that an FS6 sleeve doesn't cure plantar fasciitis or replace a progressive rehabilitation programme. If your heel pain is persisting, the important step is identifying why the plantar fascia has become overloaded and developing a plan to improve its ability to tolerate those loads again.
FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves Features & Benefits
- May provide additional comfort and support around the heel and arch
- Provides graduated compression around the foot
- Lightweight and low-profile enough to fit inside many shoes
- Can be worn underneath regular socks
- Moisture-wicking fabric helps manage moisture around the foot
- May be a useful addition to a broader plantar fasciitis treatment plan.
Compression Zone Technology
FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves use the manufacturer's Compression Zone Technology, with different levels of compression knitted into specific areas of the sleeve.
This creates a close-fitting sleeve around the arch, heel and foot. The compression may provide a feeling of support and help some people manage discomfort while standing, walking or exercising.
While compression can affect fluid movement and circulation, we would not rely on an FS6 sleeve to reduce inflammation or accelerate plantar fascia healing. Plantar fasciopathy is primarily a load-related tissue problem, so appropriate load management and progressive rehabilitation remain central to recovery.
It is also important to distinguish an FS6 foot sleeve from medical compression hosiery used to manage lower-leg swelling or venous problems.
At Masterton Foot Clinic, we stock and fit a full range of below-knee compression wear, from lighter 10 to 15 mmHg travel/flight socks through to 20 to 30 mmHg medical-grade compression stockings. Higher compression needs to be appropriately selected and fitted, and isn't the same thing as simply purchasing a general compression or flight sock online or from a pharmacy.
If you're experiencing significant or persistent swelling of the feet or lower legs, we recommend having the cause assessed rather than assuming a foot compression sleeve is the appropriate solution.
Can Be Worn Anywhere, Anytime
FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves are thin enough to wear under many everyday or sports socks and inside footwear, making them a convenient option for people who find compression comfortable.
They can be worn during everyday activities or exercise if comfortable. Some people may also choose to wear them while resting.
We would not routinely recommend wearing compression continuously day and night, and an FS6 sleeve shouldn't be considered equivalent to a night splint. If first-step morning pain is a significant problem, we can advise you on whether specific stretching, rehabilitation, footwear, orthoses, or a night splint is appropriate for you.
Compression should feel supportive, not painful or restrictive. Stop using the sleeve and seek advice if you develop increasing pain, numbness, tingling, unusual colour changes or other concerning symptoms.
Who Can Benefit From Wearing FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves?
- People with plantar fasciitis: an FS6 sleeve may provide additional comfort and arch support as part of a wider treatment and rehabilitation plan.
- People with some types of heel or arch discomfort: the sleeve may provide comfortable compression during standing, walking or exercise. Persistent heel pain should still be properly diagnosed, as not all heel pain is plantar fasciitis.
- Athletes and active people: some people enjoy the feeling of compression and support during activity. However, we wouldn't claim that the sleeve flushes out lactic acid, accelerates tissue healing or prevents plantar fasciitis.
- People with swollen feet or legs require a different approach. If swelling is the primary concern, a properly fitted below-knee compression garment may be more appropriate. At Masterton Foot Clinic, we can assess and fit compression ranging from 10 to 15 mmHg travel/flight socks to 20 to 30 mmHg medical-grade below-knee compression, depending on your needs and whether compression is appropriate for you.
You don't need to let plantar fasciitis heel pain stop you doing the activities you enjoy. Compression sleeves can be a useful comfort measure for some people, but the key to lasting improvement is understanding why your plantar fascia has become painful and progressively restoring its ability to tolerate the demands you place on it.
