We recently treated a patient who suffered a sudden forceful impact (blunt force trauma) to the top of his foot. While his MRI scan and x-rays showed that he didn’t have any fractures, it was evident to our podiatrists that the site was scarred from the impact as the joints at the midfoot were stiff and very painful.

When the patient first came to us, he described his pain as an 8/10 for severity, with little to no improvement previously without foot mobilisation therapy (FMT), despite wearing a moonboot. We introduced FMT in bi-weekly sessions, performed by our podiatrists in 20-minute appointments.

Over the course of nine weeks, the patient has gone from extreme pain and being confined to a moonboot, to now reporting a pain severity of 0/10 with the occasional 1/10 on the pain scale. Very proudly, he is now discharged from our care and enjoying a mobile and active life.

For this patient, foot mobilisation worked to break down the scar tissue left by the injury as well as the connective tissue restrictions through the midfoot and the surrounding joints. By helping to increase the synovial fluid (which we call the ‘grease fluid’) within the joints, the joints can move well and remain well lubricated, promoting movement both now and in the future.

Here is video footage of this patient receiving his foot mobilisation treatment:

The feedback we get following FMT is that patients are able to move better and feel a lot less pain following their care.
